Sir Dunstan St Omer

Born: October 24th, 1927
Place of Birth: , Castries

Sir Dunstan St Omer is St Lucia’s premier artist and muralist.  He designed St Lucia’s National Flag and his murals grace the altars of many St Lucian churches, including the notable Holy Family Mural at Church of the Holy Family at Jacmel, Roseau.

Sir Dunstan St. Omer is a leading artist in Saint Lucia and he struggled a lot to get the recognition from the international l level. He did his schoolings in local schools and his talent in the art is recognized in St. Mary College when he was doing secondary school. At the age of 87 he passed away and it is announced by Saint Lucia online news.

Born in Castries to Gerald and Louisa St Omer, Dunstan St Omer attended the St Aloysius R.C. Boys School and St. Mary’s College. It was at St. Mary’s that he befriended Derek Walcott and Leo ‘Spa’ St Helene who were to have a lasting influence on his life.  The trio were introduced to National Cultural Hero Harold Simmons who was to have a profound impact on the boys and their art.  It was with Harry Simmons that the group began to value the St Lucian landscape as a worthy subject for artistic reflection.

In 1946 St. Omer left St Lucia for Curacao to work with Dutch Oil; there he was influenced by Greek painter Pandelis.  When he returned to St Lucia in 1949 it was to various teaching jobs, including a stint at his alma mater.  He received a scholarship to go to Puerto Rico where he studied art for a year and returned home to work with mentor Harry Simmons as sub-editor at the Voice newspaper, eventually replacing him from 1959-1962.  Sir Dunstan worked with the Ministry of Education as an art specialist and remained there until he retired in 2000.

Sir Dunstan’s first mural was commissioned by Fr. Joseph Vrignaud, for the altar of Our Lady’s Chapel at La Clery.  He would go on to paint several more through out the island, drawing acclaim and criticism for his depictions of black divinity.  Sir Dunstan once said, ‘If my faith depends on Christ being white, I think I will lose my faith because the relationship that exists in the world between the white race and the black race is one of prejudice and inferiority for the blacks…’  Sir Dunstan’s work has inspired an art movement and he is father of the prismism style of painting.

He was awarded a Papal Medal by the Catholic Church and the St Lucia Cross by the St Lucia government on the occasion of the island’s 25th Anniversary.  In 2007 the Folk Research Centre declared him a National Cultural Hero.  Accolade was to follow accolade as in 2009 he received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of the West Indies, and in 2010 was the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) was conferred on him in the New Years Honours of H.M Queen Elizabeth II

Sir Dunstan is married to Cynthia St. Croix and together they have nine children.

Harold Simmons

Born: December 2nd, 1914
Place of Birth: Castries
Died: May 6th, 1966
Place of Death: Garrand, Babonneau, Saint Lucia

Harold Simmons has often been called the father of St Lucian culture because of his tireless work researching, recording and promoting the island’s rich cultural heritage. He wrote fastidiously on fading traditions and facilitated other researchers’ work in the field and as a result has preserved many folkloric practices that would otherwise have been lost.

Below is a biographical article on Simmons taken from The Growth of the Modern West Indies by Gordon K. Lewis (Jamaica: Ian Randle Publishers, 2004):

Harold Simmons was born in 1915 and died in 1966. He was well known in St. Lucia and beyond as a local historian, archaeologist, artist, folklorist and social worker. A social worker is the one who involve themselves in the social welfare activities. They indulge in such activities whole heartedly with the aim to help people. It is they who help children and the families with food, shelter, clothes and the health care. Check over here that describes the type of social work that Harold Simmons involved in. He was a mentor to the young Derek Walcott and Dunstan St. Omer who regard him as their teacher. The Folk Research Centre has recognized him as the inspiring spirit of all their work. Mr. Simmons was also a journalist, who served as a local correspondent for the Trinidad Guardian and Reuter’s. He was also editor of the VOICE from late 1957 to April 1959.

Born in Castries, Mr. Simmons received his early education at the Methodist elementary schools and St. Mary’s College. After leaving school, he worked with the firm of W.B.Harris, which he left in 1940 after six years, to devote time to his painting, which had by then received much recognition in St. Lucia, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States. He also started Art classes and was awarded the Art Teacher Diploma and became an Associate of the Royal Drawing Society.

Harold Simmons joined the Civil Service in 1946 as Co-operative Societies Officer and Registrar of Co-operative Societies. In connection with this work, which he helped to pioneer in the island, he attended courses in Jamaica and at Co-operative College, Stanford Hall, Leicester, Britain. During his stay in the Civil Service he was Secretary and Executive Officer of the Castries Fire Relief Fund Committee 1948-1949; Secretary of the Standing Economic and Financial Advisory Committee; District Officer; Officer-in-charge of Beane Field; and Housing Manager.

Simmons also found time for voluntary social work and was island secretary of the St. Lucia Boy Scouts Association from 1942-1946, and later became a District Commissioner. His work in the Boy Scout Movement was recognized with the award of the organisation’s Medal of Merit. He served on many Government bodies including the St. Lucia Tourist Board and the Library Committee. He was a member of the Local Advisory Committee, and also a member of the local advisory committee of the Extra Mural Department of the University of the West Indies.

A lover of music and drama, he was a foundation member of the St. Lucia Arts and Crafts Society of the forties. He was also closely associated with the work of the St. Lucia Arts Guild, and many other local cultural groups. He was a foundation member of the St. Lucia Archaeological and Historical Society and was the Society’s Archaeological Secretary from its inception.

As artist, folklorist, historian and archeologist he commanded an encyclopedic knowledge of local conditions and always placed it, with his genial eagerness to please, at the disposal of the visitor. He had an imaginative range of interests unspoiled by a modern university education. He was friendly, garrulous, versatile, always a joy to be with. Most of all, he stayed in St. Lucia throughout his tragic life to fight colonial philistinism while others left. He spurned the ‘pleasures of exile’ to embrace the thankless task of bringing culture to the anarchy of a narrow-minded society that gave him back little but neglect and contempt. The new West Indian society of the future – which this book only implicitly describes – will, let us hope, one day pay him his full reward.

Simmons’ seminal research and documentation on the flower festivals, the Kèlè, folk dances and other traditional practices are captured in his work NOTES ON FOLKLORE IN ST. LUCIA, WEST INDIES which he compiled for the benefit of a visiting team of US Peace Corps Volunteers. He laments in this work that these practices were at risk because of an abiding shame about local culture:

“…the average leader is ashamed of his heritage, his folkways, his leitmotif. The teachers of our schools consider it infra dig to associate with many of our folkways. Our leaders, once they attain a symbol status, are embarrassed of their past and grass roots.”

Harold Simmons mentored Saint Lucian cultural luminaries Dunstan St Omer and Derek Walcott as young artists and inspired in them a curiosity about Saint Lucia’s folk culture.  Dunstan St Omer credits Simmons with having introduced the idea of West Indian landscape and life as a worthy subject for study in his work.

Simmons wrote:

“Art in itself could not be called Art unless it springs from the people, unless it records these experiences felt and experienced.” – The Need for an Arts and Craft Society, April 21st, 1945

Simmon’s death was keenly felt by those who were touched by him.  Nobel Laureate and former student and protégé Derek Walcott summed up the loss in an obituary following his death in 1966:

“Simmon’s career outside his art was rich and various. He was an amateur botanist, an active historical researcher, a folklorist and an eloquent interpreter and defender of creole and creole customs.” – The Sunday Guardian (Trinidad) May 15th, 1966

Frank Norville

Considering the social justice and political change in mind; working towards the need for the above in an active way is called cultural activism. These acts have direct impact on the society in a structured and organized way. It is the way by which the cultural organizing focuses on art and culture rather than the staging an issue as a campaign. The activists fight against the act of oppression through the community similarities like tradition and language. In this way, the issues are removed from the society. Cultural organizing helps in creating the change and it helps culture regain its value.

The need for a cultural activist arises when an action moves out of the track and there will be a serious cause behind it. The cause may be anything like world peace, opposition against a company, rights of women, and many more similar causes. The action may take up the form of canvassing, rallies, meetings in public, fasting and the like. Activism is a powerful tool that has played a key role putting a full stop to slavery, racism opposition, environment protection, worker welfare, fight for equality of women and many more. From the past to the present and to the future; activism takes some form or another in the political system. There are many types of activism. Have a peek at these cultural activists who made change in the community; Frank Norville is one among them.

Frank Norville is a photographer, actor, dancer and cultural activist, but what he is most known for is his work as a singer, musician and composer.  He has arranged and recorded a large repertoire of Saint Lucian folk music and is credited with preserving what might otherwise be lost.  He has written a booklet on the folk dances of Saint Lucia and in 1983 published Songs of St Lucia: ‘folk songs’, a comprehensive scoring of the island’s most popular folk music.

‘In the midst of the pervasive influence of North American, Trinidadian and Jamaican musical artforms transmitted via the electronic media, Frank has insisted and succeeded in retaining the Saint Lucian indigenous musical tradition, its richeness and variety which he conveys in his highly personalised and confident style of delivery when he sings, an aesthetic experience that lingers long in the memory.” – Jacques Compton, Foreword to Songs of St Lucia

Joseph ‘Rameau’ Poleon – Papa Kilte

Place of Birth: Belle Vue, Vieux Fort

Due to the Admiration of the public, he joined the folk group as a lead singer and also as a drummer. Folk music came into existence during the 20th century. The folk music is also called as world music and it can be given many names such as music with unknown composers, music which is transmitted orally, etc. He has attended the Caribbean festival and gone for the world tour widely in Europe and North America. The Caribbean region is found to be located in the Gulf of Mexico and the Northern Mainland which is present in the Caribbean plate. He made number of albums and became popular for the folk music. He recorded for the folkways record and completed five dance tunes and appeared as a lead violinist in the Caribbean island. You can check blog and know more details about this fiddler.

‘He remains the most eminent St Lucian violinist’ Jounen Kweyol 2000-20

The child of Jolliffe Joseph Poleon, a famed fortune/teller herbalist and Tina Poleon, Rameau Poleon started to play the violin under the tutelage of his uncle Flood Poleon at the age of 15.  His first public performance was at Laurenson’s Hall in Micoud which was met with critical acclaim, and he soon developed a following.  In 1979 he met with Eric Adley, cultural activist and musician and formed the Morne Gallian Quadrille Band. Together they performed at CARIFESTA 1981 in Barbados and travelled in Europe and North America & Caribbean.

About FRC

frcbldg.jpg

The Folk Research Centre (FRC) was established in 1973 as repository for cultural heritage, a vehicle for research, study, recording and promulgating Saint Lucia’s rich heritage.  It houses an extensive library of publications, audio visual recordings and photographs and is the major study centre for work carried out into Saint Lucia’s folk culture by both nationals and visiting researchers and students.

The main objectives of the Folk Research Centre are:

  • to promote research into Saint Lucia’s culture;
  • to explore and clarify the role of culture in the development of our people;
  • to contribute to the cultural development of our people

In addition to its research facilitation mandate, the FRC runs several programmes aimed at promoting folk practices and ensuring their succession.  Among these are Kwéyòl language classes, school programmes for both primary and secondary aged children, Kwéyòl translation services, Kwéyòl orthography, folk art production and exhibitions.

In August 1999 the FRC was granted Development Agency Status and its headquarters at Mount Pleasant, Castries have been deemed a heritage site as an historical building.

The FRC’s primary thrust in public sensitisation and promotion of Creole culture culminates in October with Creole heritage month.  Jounen Kwéyòl celebrated at the end of October, is a community based celebration of Creole food, music and folk traditions and is observed in conjunction with Journée internationale du Créole.  Jounen Kwéyòl has grown since its inception in 1984 and has gained so much momentum as to become one of the most anticipated events on the national calendar.

The FRC is dedicated to the values of koudmen, the spirit of cooperation, and the responsible stewardship of Saint Lucia’s cultural heritage and resources, and as such is committed to cooperation with other local, regional and international bodies in its efforts to promote a global understanding of culture in development.

Petronilla Deterville dies

The following article was written by John Robert Lee in November 2008 after Petronilla Deterville and her Cecilian Rays and other young musicians, had staged a concert that featured the music of Charles Cadet. She was in the midst of producing a student production of Rawle Gibbons’ “Sing de Chorus” directed by Kentilia Louis, when she died.

Educating yourself about music composition is a procedure that consumes lots of time. You may not know most of the things. That’s fine! You can start with all that you know so far about music. Focus on a particular skill of composition at a time. Here’s a great post to read that lets you know that starting with little skills is much easier to learn.

The Folk Research Centre mourns her passing and offers condolences to her family and the community of Anse La Raye.

Petronilla Deterville – a genuine heroine

As with so many of our significant words, “hero” has become devalued by misunderstanding and politicization. Efforts to identify and honour national heroes have foundered, either because of indifference or because ‘heroes’ would be raised up on their political mileage. The cultural heroes gallery of the FRC has been more successfully framed with the lifetime achievements of Harold Simmons, Dame Sesenne Descartes and Dunstan St. Omer, since no one can dispute their outstanding contributions to our cultural life. And those at great personal cost and sacrifice. (In the case of Simmons who died a suicide in 1966, the price of his commitment was tragic.)

The dictionary definition of hero places courage or outstanding achievements as the qualification for heroic status. And the potential hero is clearly home when the achievements are gained by extraordinary courage. So — it is too early to lay the heavy burden of hero on Darren Sammy or Laverne Spencer. (I would even suggest that it is too soon to lay the mantle of superstar/hero on the majority of our local soca chanters, but I don’t want to go down that road at this time.)

Occasionally I become aware of certain St. Lucian community leaders for whose selfless dedication I can offer nothing less than great admiration. They include teachers, nurses, social welfare workers, creative arts group leaders, and they are often women. I’m sure if I searched more thoroughly I would find persons in agriculture, fishing, various trades, the religious life and other areas whose love for the people in their village or town is proven by the number of hours they give to their causes. Those who care for the elderly and homeless must be top of the list.

Anyway, I want to sing the praises of one of these community figures to whom I would give the title of “heroine”.

For 27 years, Petronilla Deterville of Anse La Raye (with Canaries, surely one of the most destitute of our tiny, picturesque villages) has led the Cecilian Rays. They are principally a village choir of very young persons. Their feature has been folk music, and they have ventured into musical theatre (no mean feat), performing the folk musical Tinday at the 1992 Carifesta and locally.  The play was written by poet McDonald Dixon, with music composed by Charles Cadet. I remember one of the leading performers in 1992 was a little shabeen child who later developed into the very talented Nadeige.

For their 27th anniversary, The Cecilian Rays, under the indefatigable leadership of their founder and director Mrs. Deterville, have presented an evening of the songs of Charles Cadet. This was held on St. Cecilia’s day, November 22nd, at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School. Accompanying the Rays were the Helen Folk Dancers and the Silver Shadow Dancers.

Time out: to remind readers who may not know, that Charles Cadet is the composer of St. Lucia’s Christmas anthem Poinsettia Blossoms. He has also composed a number of other ‘classical folk’ songs, including Ode to an artist for the late actor Howick Elcock who died in 1972. (That song was recently revived by Barbara Cadet, cousin to Charles, in honour of Sir John Compton.) Charles Cadet is also well-known for his unique collaboration with the other Walcott twin, Roderick (1930-2000) on all his popular musical plays. These include Banjo Man, Chanson Marianne, Conte Mabouya, The Wonderful World of Brother Rabbit. Walcott and Cadet have made a very unique and significant contribution to the development of Caribbean musical theatre, that is still largely unrecognized.

For St. Lucia’s first Independence celebrations in 1979, he composed a Mass for Independence, performed then, but yet to be presented again. For Jamaica’s 25th Anniversary of Independence he composed a piece titled A dream of freedom which premiered in London. In more recent years he has composed songs for younger singers like Lennie Stone and Elra Ermay.

Cadet was well known among his contemporaries of the fifties and sixties as one of our best tenors.

To get back to Petronilla Deterville and what I consider her heroic status: the group with which Mrs. Deterville produced the Tribute to Charles Cadet numbered almost fifty. Fifty energetic, and no doubt, very contemporary young St. Lucians. I kept thinking, as the show progressed, if these kids were not there that night, on the stage of the CCSS, if they had not been working on this production over the past few weeks, they could have been lost somewhere in the criminal and promiscuous under-world of Anse la Raye or Canaries or the other communities from which they come.

And Petronilla Deterville has been working with these young people, and others like them, for twenty-seven years! Parents, teachers, counselors, police officers and others who work on the front line of youth problems today, will appreciate the heroic undertaking of this courageous woman.

But not only has Petronilla Deterville determined that the youth of Anse La Raye have a creative group to come to, to develop their talents in — she has made the promotion and development of St. Lucian music her foremost goal. She has now ensured that the life-long work of Charles Cadet in his composition of St. Lucian ‘classical-folk’ music will not be forgotten. In implanting the lyrics and music of this master’s songs into the memories of these young people, she guarantees that they will endure.

But there is more: on the night of the performance she announced the launch of the Anse La Raye Charles Cadet Youth Orchestra, complete with acronym ACYO! To see little boys and girls from the west coast shouldering their violins and bowing away is nothing less than a miraculous sight! Yes, out of Anse la Raye that neglected village — home, by the way, of the unassuming People’s Kaiso Monarch Herb Black. Some brown paper bags were passed around for the collection of whatever funds were given, so that more instruments would be bought for the Orchestra. What has been achieved in Anse La Raye by Mrs. Deterville is a model of what is possible elsewhere.

We who have been working for years in the metropolis of Castries in the creative arts are loud in our complaints of the indifference and official neglect encountered. Not without reason. However, Mrs. Deterville, in far more limiting circumstances, with far less resources, and only she knows at what personal sacrifice and heartbreak, has kept her group alive and growing. She is proving what many have been shouting for years — that the creative arts can make an important and vital contribution to our young people and communities. Instead of guns and knives and drugs these young people of the Cecilian Rays, and now the ACYO, are taking up their voices, their costumes, their instruments and the songs of composers like Charles Cadet and Herb Black, and building for themselves and us, the creative St. Lucia of today and tomorrow.

For these reasons, for her great courage and real achievements, Petronilla Deterville, is for me, a true St. Lucian hero
